AfriCat UK is committed to the support of two wildlife conservation charities in Namibia: The AfriCat Foundation and the Namibian Lion Trust. Both charities are working to increase awareness of the issues facing endangered species in Namibia and to find solutions to the often conflicting interests of mankind and the animal kingdom. <\/p>
The Namibian Lion Trust is focused on the long-term conservation of lions. The charity employs local people as Lion Guards who support their communities by helping fellow farmers apply the strategies that have been developed to mitigate Human Wildlife conflict. The charity has sponsored a number of local community initiatives, including the building of a school. The practical strategies are driven by the Namibian Lion Trust\u2019s research initiatives which have inspired successful livestock management techniques, such as the use of bomas, and support schemes, such as an early warning system utilizing GPS technology. The AfriCat Foundation is based on Okonjima Nature Reserve which supports a diversity of habitat and wildlife. Within the reserve are rhino, leopards, pangolin, brown hyena and other endangered species. Visitors are able to see first hand conservation efforts at work while the research undertaken builds up the knowledge on what it takes to run an effective 'island reserve' for all the inhabitants to live out their natural lives. The AfriCat Foundation based at Okonjima Lodge is able to fund much of its work through guests visiting the reserve. The Namibian Lion Trust has no direct source of income.
